How to Figure Out What You’re Really Good At

What is your superpower? Even if you don’t think you have one, we’d like to take a look with ya and see what it is that makes you, dare-we-say, Marvelous?

(Don’t come for us, Disney, it’s too good of a pun!)

Discovering Your Superpower

Can you fly? See through walls? Clear skyscrapers in a single bound? Probably not.

Can you find a way to harmonize what you love to do with what makes you money?

This might sound just as unlikely as the other superpowers, but it’s totally possible and 100% within your reach.

Don’t believe us? Keep reading, friend!

Assess Yourself Before You Wreck Yourself

Here’s the thing- you don’t have to live through a montage of you trying on hundreds of different types of work, skills, industries, etc., to find your superpower.

You can get to the bottom of this right now with a quick lil’ assessment and a touch of introspection.

Mad Skills

  • What are you good at, naturally? What comes easy to you?
What are you trained to do– whether through hands-on experience, formal education, or hours of independent study?
What is your trade? What are the words you use to describe yourself and your work?

Happiness

  • What brings you joy?
What do you just love doing, for the sake of it?
What kind of work can you get excited about?
What do you do for fun when no one is watching?

Opportunity

  • What fields or trends are growing right now?
Where are the current “money-making opportunities”?
Where will the “money-making opportunities” be in the future?

Passion

  • What are your hobbies?
What do you absolutely geek out over, like you just can’t stop talking about it at parties?
What activities or ideas do you get so into that you lose all track of time?

You might be tempted to skip this “passion” question because the whole idea of “following your passion” is a little too… capital R Romantic, rose-colored glasses and all.

And sure, we get that. Following your passion is kind of Romantic. But it’s also pretty freakin’ sound business advice.

Think about it – being an entrepreneur can be tough stuff. It can be lonely, isolating, grueling work, and it takes some serious grit and determination to persevere to the point of success.

If you’re trying to build your business around something you don’t feel all that strongly about or that you’re not wildly excited about… you’re probably going to fail. We don’t want that for you. And you definitely don’t want that for you, either!

Service

Finally, the last piece of the superpower puzzle– service to others.

We invite you to consider:

  • How do you improve the human condition?
How are you making the world a better place?
How are you impacting others positively?

Where These Five Elements Align

This super-cool graphic considers the five major elements of your superpower and shows us what that harmony looks like.

Think about these combinations–

Opportunity + Skill = $$$, but also zzz.

Skill + Happiness = Happy, but potentially broke

Opportunity + Happiness = Nothin’ but a dream!

To have a true superpower, you need to find where your Opportunity, Skill, Happiness, Passion, and Service all intersect into a beautiful… geometric lotus?

Time for Some Homework

To help you organize your journey to ~super(em)powered discovery~, we’ve got a couple of pieces of homework for ya. Oh, we know, homework sounds painful, but you’ll thank us later!

See what we’ve got below, but you can also check them out in context and see how Chris uses these tools to figure out his superpower in this vid:

1. Check out this blank spreadsheet and fill it in with your skills, happiness, opportunities, passions, and potential services. Then you can peep the whole thing through the lens of industry or type of work and see if it’s the right fit for you!

2. Next up, we wanna share this similarly easy-to-use little matrix that digs in a little more on what it is you’re producing or selling, be it an educational product, physical product, app, or website.

This helps you get a grasp on how you’re going to use your superpower now that you know what it is. Super exciting stuff, ain’t it? Heck yeah!

Feeling superpowerful yet?! We definitely are! And we’re so excited to see what dope power you come up with and what you’ll do with it!
